In Brief: Deconstructing McCain in Kentuck
Just to the south of Cincinnati here is the border and, beyond that, Kentucky. Which is where John McCain appeared today. And spoke.
“I will not make promises I intend to forget.”
This is a brilliant catch-all: He makes the intimation that he’s going to keep all his promises, but is, in fact, doing the exact opposite by making no statement whatsoever about keeping any promises. So any promise that he makes will simply aspire to me remembered. Should it be remembered, it might be fulfilled, but as we’ve already discussed, that’s not really on the table. If the promise is forgotten, it’s okay because he didn’t intend to forget it, oops, my bad. If a promise is broken or unfulfilled, the out is easy and twofold: oops, I forgot and/or oops, my bad. Of course, he could always rephrase and say “I promise I will not make any promises I intend to forget” and simply forget that promise, erasing the entire need for the previous argument or apology.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. And baby squirrels. Unfortunately, John, intention does not play a large role in senility.
