Phyllis Schlafly recently appeared as a guest speaker at the Citadel as part of a lecture series for a new course oxymoronically titled “Conservative Intellectual Tradition in America”.
If The Citadel’s intent is to set themselves back decades, or fan the flames of gender hostility on campus, they certainly invited the right person. For those of you not familiar with Phyllis Schlafly, she basically believes feminists are responsible for anything and everything that’s ever gone wrong in the world; her idea of a feminist being any woman who’s not a far right conservative tight ass.
Her lecture was titled “Cultural Conservatism and the Religious Right”; however, Mrs.Schlafly veered onto her usual course of harping about feminists – a discussion ill suited for any military academy, let alone one with a history of legal battles regarding gender.
Schlafly made her usual catty, derisive statements, some of which follow:
“Feminists are having a hard time being elected because they essentially are unlikeable.”
“Some of them are pretty. They don’t all look like Bella Abzug.”
“…feminist is a bad word and everything they stand for is bad.”
That kind of vitriolic garbage has no place in an educational setting that claims respect as one of its’ core values:
“First and foremost respect means to treat other people with dignity and worth – the way you want others to treat you. Respect for others eliminates any form of prejudice, discrimination, or harassment (including but not limited to rank, position, age, race, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, physical attributes, etc.)…”
Mr. Mallory Factor, who instituted the course Schlafly spoke for, “served as a Senior Fellow for the US House of Representatives Republican Policy Committee from 2007 to 2011”, so he knew what he was getting when he scheduled her. He did a disservice to the students and the school in allowing Schlafly to demean women in the framework of a lecture for coursework.
He and the school owe apologies to the student body- male and female, for condoning Schlafly’s despicable gender baiting.
