Congressional Republicans Are a Disgrace

Print Friendly

I love the internet. A thought came to me last night, or a question really, about how exactly to get the point across to non-diehard Republicans just how detrimental our current conservative legislators have been for the country. So this morning I typed three simple words into Google: republicans block bill. It returned “About 18,800,000 results”.

Now of course, this goes back years, so let’s focus in on the period I’m referring to: President Obama’s time in office. Don’t worry, I have neither the time nor the inclination to put you through an entire rundown- that’s a project for you on a rainy day; as of October 2010 they were already up to 375 bills they had blocked. I have not found the current tally yet, but in the meantime I’ll give you a sample:

“There’s no disagreement on Capitol Hill that more needs to be done to protect the country’s critical infrastructure from potentially devastating cyberattacks. It’s just that lawmakers, particularly in the Senate, can’t agree on how to go about doing it.”

December 20, 2011 House Republicans formally block payroll tax break “compromise ..

“As expected, in a series of votes earlier today, House Republicans formally blocked legislation overwhelmingly approved by the U.S. Senate a few days ago that would temporarily extend the one-year payroll tax break enacted by Congress last year (S. Amdt. 1465 to H.R. 3630) for another two months.”

October 20, 2011 Senate Republicans Block Dem Jobs Bill For Teachers, Firefighters …

1 year ago GOP Blocks Bill to Raise Oil Companies’ Liability to $10 Billion

December 21, 2010 GOP Blocks Bill to Prevent Child Marriage

December 2, 2010  House GOP Blocks Child Nutrition Bill

“The Democrats managed to pass the bill this afternoon by holding a vote on the Republican sex-offenders amendment as a stand-alone bill. The Republicans still tried to kill the child nutrition bill with the same motion to recommit, which all but one Republican voted for, but the Democrats managed to hold strong against the motion knowing that they had already voted for the amendment and that the motion to recommit served no purpose other than to stop the bill.”

Dec 1, 2010  First Read – GOP to block all bills until tax cuts are addressed

And yet, on Eric Cantor’s website, in the interest of keeping his constituents “informed”, there’s his “Jobs Legislation Tracker“, which has more to do with- you guessed it- tax breaks for businesses, which rarely if ever create jobs. Some examples:

H.R. 872 Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act

(5) USE OF AUTHORIZED PESTICIDES- Except as provided in section 402(s) of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the Administrator or a State may not require a permit under such Act for a discharge from a point source into navigable waters of a pesticide authorized for sale, distribution, or use under this Act, or the residue of such a pesticide, resulting from the application of such pesticide.’

H.R. 910 Energy Tax Prevention Act

To amend the Clean Air Act to prohibit the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency from promulgating any regulation concerning, taking action relating to, or taking into consideration the emission of a greenhouse gas to address climate change, and for other purposes.

H.R. 2018 Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act

To amend the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to preserve the authority of each State to make determinations relating to the State’s water quality standards, and for other purposes.

H.R. 2587 Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act

That the Board shall have no power to order an employer (or seek an order against an employer) to restore or reinstate any work, product, production line, or equipment, to rescind any relocation, transfer, subcontracting, outsourcing, or other change regarding the location, entity, or employer who shall be engaged in production or other business operations, or to require any employer to make an initial or additional investment at a particular plant, facility, or location’.

H.R. 2401 Transparency in Regulatory Analysis of Impacts on The Nation

Establishment- The President shall establish a committee to be known as the Committee for the Cumulative Analysis of Regulations that Impact Energy and Manufacturing in the United States (in this Act referred to as the ‘Committee’) to analyze and report on the cumulative and incremental impacts of certain rules and actions of the Environmental Protection Agency, in accordance with sections 3 and 4.

Eric Cantor and his cronies believe people are idiots. As I said, these types of bills have nothing to do with jobs; they are strictly meant to remove oversight by agencies such as the EPA,  and the NLRB.

Have a big mouth conservative friend or acquaintance who likes to talk about what The President hasn’t accomplished, send him/her a copy of this article and ask which party’s constituents are the idiots.
