NAACP Endorses Gay Marriage

In another historic moment for LGBT rights the 64 member body of the NAACP Board of Directors has voted to endorse gay marriage.   Only 2 directors voted against the resolution.  This action is meant as an affirmation of the 14th amendment and the stated principles that the NAACP have written in their own Constitution.

“The NAACP Constitution affirmatively states our objective to ensure the ‘political, education, social and economic equality’ of all people. Therefore, the NAACP has opposed and will continue to oppose any national, state, local policy or legislative initiative that seeks to codify discrimination or hatred into the law or to remove the Constitutional rights of LGBT citizens. We support marriage equality consistent with equal protection under the law provided under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. Further, we strongly affirm the religious freedoms of all people as protected by the First Amendment.”

This may cause some consternation in black churches and a bit of slippage in the near monolithic support of liberal causes by African Americans. However this move by the NAACP is welcome news no matter how you slice it.  It is vexing, to say the least, to watch as the right wing use LGBT rights as a wedge issue with black voters. It is very encouraging to see the pre-eminent civil rights organization in the nation stand in solidarity with the LGBT community.
