Representative Peter Defazio is a senior member on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the ranking Democratic member on the Highways and Transit subcommittee. Defazio is a Democratic conferee in the negotiations between the House and Senate on the transportation budget.
When Representative Paul Broun (flat earther Ga) bought a motion to instruct the conferees to cut the trasportation budget by $17 billion Defazio asked the following question: “Why do you hate the country so much?”
Of course the result of Defazio’s question was a histrionic rightwing whine, where-in Broun questioned Defazio’s emotional state and said he was not man enough to apologize. To which we ask, apologize for what exactly? In fact Defazio backed up his rhetoric with the following statement:
“I’m tired of their craziness, and we just need to push back with rhetoric that is as tough as theirs,” DeFazio said in an interview. “I meant what I said. Why do they hate the country so much that they don’t want to make those needed investments to put millions of people to work? It’s just that they hate Obama so much they want the economy to fail. That’s all I can figure out. Either that or they’re just nuts. One or the other and I said both those things. And I stand by it.”
It makes sense that Broun would get all huffy and demand apologies from Democrats for perceived transgressions of personal decorum. Broun was forced to apologize after calling President Obama a Marxist and comparing him to Hitler. Less than a year after that apology Broun warned constituents that Obama “might” be planning to declare martial law and install himself as dictator.
Broun also offered this peculiar take on “Obamacare”:
If ObamaCare passes, that free insurance card that’s in people’s pockets is gonna be as worthless as a Confederate dollar after the War Between The States — the Great War of Yankee Aggression.
The term “War of Yankee aggression” is a distinctly pro-confederate construct. For Broun to use that term in arguing against a policy championed by the first black president of the United States of America is a distinctly racist dogwhistle.
It is obvious that Defazio pretty much nailed it when he said the other side hates Obama so much that they want the economy to fail. The question I have is why it is ok for Broun to personally insult the president of the United States but Defazio is out of line for calling it like it is when it comes to Broun wanting America to fail to damage Obama? Defazio is completely accurate in both the initial question and the defense, while Broun is a completely deranged Obama hater. When did hating the president of the United States become a measure of one’s patriotism?
This is not the first time Defazio has taken on the Republicans for being so backwards when it comes to spending on America’s infrastructure. Check out this quote by Defazio when Republicans were threatening to block transportation funding this spring:
“We’re going to lose half of the proposed projects this construction season around America, tens of thousands of jobs, needed investment, because they got a bunch of bozos in their caucus that don’t believe we should have a national transportation system,”
I would say Defazio is pretty much on target. The Republicans are bozo’s and anti American for rooting against the economy out of unreasoned hatred for the President. I would love to hear more Democrats echo his language.
