The Freedom to Massacre

America is the land of the free.  And no other freedom quite defines and distinguishes America from the rest of the world like the freedom to own guns.  Lots and lots of guns.  Automatic shotguns, military-grade assault rifles, semi-automatic pistols.  And ammunition.  We have the freedom to purchase thousands of rounds for any conceivable caliber of weaponry.  We are free to then feed them into our weapons with clips that can hold a hundred rounds or more.

We have the freedom to stockpile all of these weapons and ammunition without raising any red flags.  No law enforcement has the authority to even question why we need to build a personal arsenal large enough to keep the Syrian rebels in the fight.  And we have the freedom from Big Brother government checking whether we are receiving mental health treatment when we stockpile our weapons.

We are free to conceal our weapons and take them into crowded areas.  High schools, universities, post offices, congressional meet-and-greets, highways at rush hour: these are long-standing traditions.  Yesterday, someone boldly expressed his freedom in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.  But think outside the box: where else can we take our weapons?  Train, bus and metro stations before Thanksgiving, malls on Black Friday, stadiums during a big game, family restaurants, suburban parks after dinner, playgrounds on a Saturday afternoon, daycare centers during the workday, beaches in July, ski resorts in January, casinos and hotels in Vegas, business and government district sidewalks at rush hour, the sky is the limit.  Someone out there is probably considering these right now, and they are perfectly free to do so.

We have the absolute freedom to take all the weapons and ammo that we stockpile into these places teeming with innocent people minding their own business, and open fire.  We have the freedom to tear bone, flesh and organ to pieces with a stream of lead fired into crowds of people who were just living ordinary lives a moment earlier.

We cannot and must not change any of the laws that we have.  Anyone who questions any aspect of our freedom to massacre is a horrible, terrible, evil, despicable, monstrous, ugly, stupid person.  They are exploiting tragedy for political gain!  Absolute freedom to guns means that everyone must stockpile weapons to defend themselves from everyone else who is stockpiling weapons.  But we have an absolute right to massacre without fear, because no ordinary civilian who happened to also be packing heat has ever interrupted a massacre, even though they have the freedom to do so.

This is the hair-trigger nation that the GOP, ALEC and the NRA want us to live in.  And we have exercised our freedom to follow them like cattle to the slaughter.  Because America is the land of the free, and by necessity, the home of the very, very brave.

The NRA must step up to the plate and take a swing at this.  If they don’t, they may be left out of the discussion.  When I was in Junior High I took a gun safety course sponsored by the NRA.  We brought our guns to school.  Our teachers made sure we all had our ammo before we went out to the gravel pit for target practice.  There was no danger.  No one was shot.  We were taught to be repesctful of the responsibility of handling a firearm.  The NRA should be the ones to best decide the laws for safe gun ownership and laws limiting the sale and ownership of firearms.  They have not wanted to take on this role, but they should.

Demaswolf – You’re describing a typical, Norman-Rockwell, American experience that applies to the average person learning to fire a weapon and then go on to hunt deer, duck, pheasant, small game. Marc was talking about the current situation we find ourselves in where we allow anyone to buy military-grade weapons, tear gas, a tactical armored vest, throat protector, groin protector, gas mask and ballistic helmet. The guy involved in the Colorado shooting had all of these. The NRA and its members can claim whatever reason they want for why we should have the right to buy these things, but I’ll always side with law enforcement.

No one should be allowed to possess weapons or armament that meet or exceed those of law enforcement.

No club or issue-based organization of enrolled members can ever ”decide” laws for the nation. Our Constitution requires that Americans elect representatives to write our laws. Our elected officials represent all of us. Organizations like the NRA, or any organization on the left, represent their members. (That’s not to say that the NRA doesn’t actually write the bills that Republicans sign.)
