Mitt Romney has tried to deflect attention from the Republican War on Women by claiming it’s really the President’s policies hurting women. Romney devotes an entire page on his campaign website to pointing out the dismal employment statistics for women since President Obama took office, while his spokeswoman Amanda Hennenberg claims:
“Women have been getting crushed in this anemic Obama economy and over 400,000 women have lost their jobs since the president took office.”
But there’s a whole other side to those statistics that the Romney camp stays away from: state and local Republican governments. As The Nation points out:
“Republicans seized control of both branches of the legislature in 11 states after the 2010 elections. It’s in these very states that public sector layoffs are disproportionately concentrated, leading to one of the biggest rounds of job losses for the public workforce since record keeping began.
Governors and state legislators promised to focus on creating jobs and balancing budgets during campaign season…Instead, these newly Republican states are targeting public workers, causing a significant drop in employment in the public sector that has threatened the entire economy.”
According to the Huffington Post:
At the start of the recovery in 2009, women constituted 57.2 percent of the public workforce. But as cities and states imposed austerity plans to balance budgets, women experienced 69.1 percent of the job cuts in government, losing some 396,000 jobs in the public sector from June 2009 to March 2012.
In addition to women losing the majority of public sector jobs, the Brookings Institute explains:
“…reducing government employment, particularly during recessions, adds workers directly to the unemployment rolls. In addition, fewer workers translates into fewer paychecks, which dampens consumption and further spreads through the economy, magnifying the effects of the recession.”
On top of the already devastating effects of state layoffs, Raw Story notes:
“…the same Romney website that chides the president for not producing jobs for women proudly boasts of the candidate’s plan to “Reduce The Federal Workforce By 10 Percent Via Attrition” and “empower” states to slash their own budgets without federal oversight, enabling state and local governments to potentially gut their own public programs with no repercussions.”
Meanwhile, Republicans have put forth no jobs bills that will actually create jobs, and have failed to act on the President’s jobs plan. Unemployed workers have been used as pawns by Republicans who complain about the employment numbers, yet want as few people as possible to find jobs before the election, so they can … you guessed it… complain about the employment numbers. They literally don’t care how long you suffer. This is Mitt Romney and his party.
