Romney spokesman Rich Beeson thinks the issues of equal pay for equal work, and a woman’s right to choose aren’t very important. When asked about the Obama campaign focusing on womens issues like equal pay and reproductive rights Beeson said “they want to talk about the small things and distract America from the important things…”
I’m a guy so I suppose the Romney campaign hopes that I will respond by pounding my hairy chest and grunting support from my cave opening… But I have a young daughter and my wife works so maybe I’m not the target audience for Mr. Machismo Rich Beeson’s sentiment here. Equal pay for equal work and a woman’s right to choose are not some obscure peripheral issues which are not important to anyone except throwback bra burners and the DFH’s. These are issues of vital importance to millions of women which affect their lives everytime they draw a paycheck.
So macho-man Beeson thinks the Obama campaign should focus on the economy and jobs? Equal pay for equal work is a direct pocketbook issue for millions of American families. It directly impacts family budgets and our ability to get along in a tough economy like few other issues can. Obama IS focusing on the economy when he talks equal pay Mr. Beeson and you would know that intuitively if your paycheck were cut to about 75% of it’s current size simply because of your gender.
The notion that a woman’s reproductive rights is just another side issue to be brushed aside as not very important is completely cuckoo as well. Just look at the obsessive focus of the US Congress on women’s rights. After promising to focus on jobs and the economy in the mid term election those right wing nut cases came to power and passed dozens of measures aimed directly at women’s choice, while completely forgetting about any sort of jobs bill. But Beeson thinks it is Barack Obama who needs to be lectured on what to focus on. Clear the log from your partisan eye Mr. Beeson before complaining of the mote in Obama’s.
Sometimes I just look at the state of our politics and I’m completely bewildered that there is any pretense that there are two legitimate sides. Right wingers have supplied an intense focus on abortion rights since coming to power in 2010 not just in congress but in state houses around the nation. And they have actively thwarted needed measures to turn the economy around, basically rooting for a miserable economy to hurt the Presidents chances at reelection. If they are able to actually pull that off it will be a HORRIBLE message for our politics going forward. Yet now they are whining about the President focusing on women’s issues rather than the economy, which is improving despite their best efforts? Please!
