Mr. Obama, Tear Down the Private Profit Prisons

“…men who so uneasily tolerate superiors patiently suffer a master, and show themselves proud and servile at the same time.” –Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America In 2007, a teenager in a depressed county of Northeastern Pennsylvania, recently bereft of its industrial and coal mining jobs, was sentenced to 3 months in juvenile detention.  – Read the full article

It’s D-Day in the Class War

“We cannot negotiate with those who say, ‘What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is negotiable.'” —John F. Kennedy On November 6th, 60 million Americans waited in line to yank the monkey wrench from Congress.  We reappointed our Democratic general for another four years.  – Read the full article

Campaign Finance 2012, Part 2: In the Aftermath of Citizens United

In 2010, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, 558 U.S. 310 was heard by the Supreme Court; at issue was whether the advertisement and showing of a political film violated the 2002 Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (commonly known as the McCain–Feingold), which prohibited “broadcast advertisements mentioning a candidate within 30 days before a primary or 60 days before a general election”. – Read the full article

Campaign Finance 2012, Part 1: David vs. Goliath

In an email shortly after President Obama had been re-elected, my boss here at All Things Democrat wrote: “Tonight, the “corporations are people” argument lost.” We had in fact beaten back the billion dollar right wing money beasts. Karl Rove and his PAC pals had misjudged both their candidate, and the electorate, which would prove to be the case in many state campaigns as well. – Read the full article

The GOP Needs to Move Further Right and Suppress the Vote Better: A Modest Proposal

It would appear that many of these “voters” gathered the wrong message from our pitch.  As he poured my wine, Reginald observed that Romney, old boy, convinced the commoners he’d had such an illustrious career in the private sector that they ought to let him continue to pursue it!  – Read the full article

“This Great Country Gave Him Opportunities.”

Hypocrisy!  Mitt’s own father was on welfare, and thus one of the 47% who are victims, who don’t take care of their lives and are dependent on government.  According to Mitt he would never be able to convince his own father to vote for him. – Read the full article

The Great 2012 Flag Flap: Caymans Or Bermuda, It’s Still About the Tax Returns

There’s been some debate over whether the flag being flown on one of the yachts that hosted a private party for Romney donors is that of the Cayman Islands, or Bermuda.  From everything I’ve seen, including a better photo of the boat by the AP, it sure looks like a Cayman Islands flag to me; and while the particular tax haven represented on the flag is not the real issue here, I’ll give you what I found on the flags: Here’s Brian Ross’s article picture: Here’s the AP picture of the boat: Here are pictures of the 2 versions of the Cayman Islands  “Red Ensign”: Red Ensign/No Disc (a smaller version can be found on the UK page for the Cayman Islands) Red Ensign/w disc According to World Flag Database, “In 1999 the Ministry of Defense decided to increase the size of the badges and to remove the white discs from blue and red ensigns… The older versions, with white discs, are still in official use.” These are the flags of Bermuda: National Flag (a smaller version can be found on the UK page for Bermuda) Government Ensign   Two obvious difference in these flags are: 1) Bermuda’s “Badge” is within the shape of a shield, while the Cayman Islands’ is inside a circle. – Read the full article

2012 GOP Convention: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly… Okay, Just the Bad and the Ugly

Money Can’t Buy You Class ABC reported today that the Romney campaign held an exclusive event aboard the yacht “Cracker Bay” to thank some of the millionaires behind Romney’s war chest; and in the spirit of poking a big stick into voters’ eyes; the yacht was flying the Cayman Islands’ flag. – Read the full article

Romney/Ryan and the Rising Corporate Aristocracy

“Corporations are people, my friend!” As Hurricane Isaac lashes Tampa, the GOP elite are doing what they do best: scurrying for cover.  And hidden within the hunkered down hotels the hurricane is also interrupting a shadow convention in which GOP luminaries plan to entertain some of America’s richest people like minstrels playing for lords. – Read the full article

No Shortage of Greasy Palms

From the Republic Report today: “Earlier today, the House of Representatives moved to help save $30 million dollars for medical device companies while defunding programs designed to expand health coverage for ordinary Americans. The House took action on legislation to “repeal a 2.3 percent excise tax on gross sales receipts in excess of $5 million for manufacturers and importers of certain medical devices, including defibrillators, pacemakers and prosthetic limbs.” Medical devices, a $140 billion industry, has an inside man in Congress, John Boehner’s policy chief Brett Loper: “Republic Report reviewed ethics forms… filed with the House clerk’s office, and noticed that Loper actually received a $100,147 bonus in 2011 for leaving his medical device lobbying group and becoming a public servant.” Then there’s Senator Marco Rubio, a current GOP “golden boy” and possible V.P. – Read the full article

Would Romney Move Big Oil Into the White House?

Mitt Romney just can’t relate to most Americans as evidenced by the numerous gaffes about his wealth over the course of the campaign. Even worse than being out of touch however, is being ignorant of the fact that you are. If you were to name corporate groups that represent the most despicable practices of American business, they would be Wall Street, big banks, and big oil. – Read the full article
